CONVERSATION WITH DR. MAO ON CHINESE NEW YEAR

Dr. Mao is the Academic Supervisor of the Tuina and Acupuncture department of our academy for TCM. Because of his passion for TCM he decided to come to the Netherlands and support the development of TCM education. The last three years he therefor had to celebrate the Chinese New Year without his family. This year his family has joined him in the Netherlands. We talked about this years’ celebration of the Chinese New Year.

“When is the celebration of the Chinese New Year?”
This Saturday on January 28th, the Chinese New Year will come. It is a bit earlier than usual as it comes more often in February. Of course from Chinese lunar calendar it is always the first day of the new year.

 “The Chinese New Year celebration consists of several days, which is the meaning of the different days of celebrating?”
In China, many Chinese people are already busy with the preparations for the new year celebration for several weeks. Cleaning, shopping, cooking... especially in the countryside. There you can even “smell” the new year!

When the new year comes, most of the people will stop their work. The celebration starts with the New Year’s Eve. This is the most important time. All the Chinese people come back home and sit around the table, enjoying the delicious food, drinking, talking, waiting for the new year to come…

The first day of the Chinese New Year, is the day for the new year greetings. People will call on their relatives and friends to say “Guo Nian Hao”. That means “Happy new year”.

From second day on, most of the families stay busy with both visiting family and friends as well as welcoming them in their homes.

In the villages there are more folk customs. There it is more “gezellig” as well...

 “What does celebration of the Chinese New Year mean for you personally?”
This Chinese New Year celebration will be very special for me and my family. My family is just here since 3 months. This is the first time for them to celebrate the Chinese New Year far away from our hometown. But, it is also a new start. So the celebration for us has really double meaning.

“How will you celebrate this Chinese New Year?”
With reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve. We will prepare some special dumplings (JiaoZi). They are specially made for New Year’s Eve. Lined with concentric circles (which means reunion), they are more beautiful and tasteful. After that, on the first day of the new year, we will go to China town in Den Haag. To enjoy the Chinese New Year’s taste there.

 “How is it to be in the Netherlands with the celebration of the Chinese New Year?”
In China there is an old saying, “Ru Xiang Sui Su”. It means “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” So the celebration could not be just the same as in China. But on the other hand, it will have some special taste. It is something I am still not very sure of, but looking forward to...

“What is the meaning of the celebration of Chinese New Year?”
The new year celebration for Chinese people has a double meaning.

The first meaning is home, family and reunion. I do believe that it is not only for Chinese people. But for all the human beings. Doesn’t matter what kind of language or culture, this meaning is always the same.

The second is concerned with discarding old and bringing new. As we all know, there is another name for the Chinese New Year. That is Spring Festival. The spring is coming nearer and nearer.

The spring always means a new start, it means the returning of the green nature, it means the coming back of new life...

Just at this moment, to make a new blue print for the future, is always one of the biggest topics on the reunion dinner table.

For our school Bo Yi, for Chinese medicine, we also need to think about it. For the new year, for the future...

 “With this Chinese New Year the Year of the rooster starts. What is the meaning of this?”
The Zodiac for this Chinese New Year will be rooster. The Chinese pronunciation of the rooster is “Ji”. It is the same with luck (Ji Li). It is really auspicious, isn’t it?

GESPREK MET DR. MAO OVER CHINEES NIEUWJAAR

Dr. Mao is de Academic Supervisor van de Tuina en Acupunctuur afdelingen bij Academie Bo Yi. Dr. Mao’s passie voor TCG heeft er toe geleid dat hij naar Nederland is verhuisd om de ontwikkeling van TCG educatie te bevorderen. De afgelopen drie jaar heeft hij daardoor Chinees Nieuw Jaar zonder zijn familie moeten vieren. Dit jaar is zijn familie eindelijk in Nederland. We hadden een gesprek over de viering van dit Chinese Nieuw Jaar.

“Wanneer vindt de viering van het Chinees nieuwjaar plaats?”
Deze zaterdag op 28 januari. Het valt dit jaar iets eerder dan gebruikelijk. Vaak valt het in februari. Uiteraard is het volgens de Chinese Maankalander altijd de eerste dag van het nieuwe jaar.

“De viering van het Chinees nieuwjaar bestaat uit verschillende dagen; wat is de betekenis van deze verschillende dagen?”
In China zijn mensen vaak al weken bezig met de voorbereidingen op de viering van Chinees nieuwjaar: schoonmaken, winkelen, koken… vooral op het platteland. Daar kun je het nieuwe jaar bijna “ruiken”!

Wanneer het nieuwjaar is, hebben de meeste mensen vrij van hun werk. De viering begint met de avond voor het nieuwe jaar. Dit is een belangrijke tijd. Alle mensen vanuit alle delen van China gaan hiervoor terug naar huis om samen te zijn en te genieten van heerlijk eten, drinken, gesprekken, wachtend op het nieuwe jaar.

De eerste dag van het nieuwe jaar, is de dag van de nieuwjaars begroetingen. Iedereen belt of bezoekt zijn familie en vrienden om “Guo Nian Hao”, ofwel “Gelukkig Nieuw Jaar” te wensen. De daarop volgende dagen blijven gevuld met het bezoeken, of uiteraard ontvangen, van familie en vrienden.

Op het platteland bestaan meer gebruiken. Daar is het ook altijd extra “gezellig”.

“Wat betekent de viering van het Chinese nieuwjaar voor u persoonlijk?”
Deze viering van het Chinees nieuwjaar is heel bijzonder voor mijn familie en mij. Mijn familie is hier pas drie maanden en het is de eerste keer dat ze Chinees nieuwjaar niet in onze geboortestad vieren. Maar, het is ook een nieuwe start! Deze viering heeft dus zeker een dubbele betekenis.

 “Hoe gaat u dit jaar het Chinees nieuwjaar vieren?”
Met het diner op nieuwjaarsavond. We zullen speciale dumplings (JiaoZi) bereiden. Deze dumplings zijn specifiek voor de viering van Chinees nieuwjaar, ze worden versierd met concentrische cirkels, die reünie symboliseren. Daarna, op de eerste dag van het nieuwe jaar, gaan we naar China Town in Den Haag, om daar wat van de sfeer te proeven.

 “Hoe is het om in Nederland te zijn tijdens het Chinees nieuwjaar?”
In China is een oud gezegde, “Ru Xiang Sui Su”. Het betekent: “wanneer je in Rome bent, doe zoals de Romeinen”. Daarom is deze viering niet zoals in China. Maar zal het een nieuwe manier worden. Ik weet nog niet helemaal zeker hoe dat eruit gaat zien, maar ik kijk er naar uit….

“Wat is de betekenis van de viering van Chinees nieuwjaar?”
De viering van het Chinees nieuwjaar heeft een dubbele betekenis.

De eerste betekenis is thuis, familie en reünie. Ik geloof dat dit niet alleen geldt voor Chinese mensen. Taal, cultuur of achtergrond doen er niet toe; deze betekenis is universeel.

De tweede betekenis heeft betrekking op het achterlaten van het oude en het komen van het nieuwe. Zoals bekend is er nog een andere naam voor het Chinese nieuwjaar: het Lente Festival. De lente komt vanaf nu steeds dichterbij.

Lente betekent altijd een nieuwe start, het betekent het terugkomen van de groene natuur, het betekent het terugkomen van nieuw leven….

Op het moment van de viering van Chinees nieuwjaar, is het maken van nieuwe plannen voor de toekomst altijd een van de grootste onderwerpen aan tafel.

Ook voor onze school Bo Yi en voor Chinese Geneeskunde moeten we daarbij stilstaan. Nadenken over het nieuwe jaar, de toekomst….

“Met dit Chinese nieuwjaar begint het jaar van de Haan. Wat is hier de betekenis van?”
Het teken van de dierenriem van dit Chinese nieuwjaar is de Haan. De uitspraak van het Chinese woord voor Haan is “Ji”. Dit is het gelijk aan de uitspraak van het woord geluk “Ji Li”. Dat is veelbelovend, niet?!

 Tot slot, wens is iedereen een gelukkig en gezond jaar van de Haan!
